Celebrating salmon and culture
The Challenge
I served as lead writer and interpretive planner for a new Welcome Centre in Bella Coola, BC, highlighting the vital role of salmon in the Bella Coola Valley. This project was developed in partnership with the Nuxalk Nation in whose unceded territory the hatchery sits.
The Approach
To create an authentic and engaging experience, I travelled to Bella Coola to collaborate with Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Salmonid Enhancement team. Together, we partnered with Nuxalk Nation representatives and knowledge holders to envision a well-rounded introduction to salmon conservation and the cultural significance of salmon within Nuxalk territory.
The process included touring the valley, delving into the intricate details of salmon rearing, and listening to knowledge holders share their stories. From these rich collaborations, we brainstormed messages and experiences to bring the stories to life. The result was a balanced mix of interpretive elements—from having Nuxalk language incorporated into every display, to original illustrations of ecosystems, classic museum reproductions of fish habitats, and family-friendly activities like a “What kind of salmon personality are you?” quiz.
Lessons Learned
This project underscored the value of an interdisciplinary approach. By blending traditional knowledge, creative interpretive techniques, and engaging visuals, we were able to create a multifaceted experience. It was a powerful reminder of how collaboration across disciplines and cultures can lead to truly transformative visitor experiences.
