Hello friends-

This year I had an insight about myself: if I don't take a summer holiday, my brain will take one for me.
You see, my partner and I prefer to do our travel in the off-season; I tend to work through the summer. But this year I found that my brain just started booking off early each day; work tasks I had scheduled for myself just didn't get done at quite my usual pace. I found myself just leaving my desk and sitting outside listening to the tanagers and chickadees. It wasn't a bad thing.
Work has been fascinating, though. I have been working for several months with Ingenium and Double Dare Design on an interpretive master plan for Capilano River Salmon Hatchery; I am excited to begin the design phase of the Kebaowek Cultural Centre working directly on contract to Kebaowek First Nation; I am beginning an interpretive master planning process with Historic Joy Kogawa House in Vancouver (that one is gonna be thematically challenging), and I am on the home stretch of a design concept for a Marine Discovery Centre in Port Angeles WA, collaborating with the lovely and talented Doug Munday and MIG Design.
I also decided to teach myself German this summer since I wasn't taking a holiday. Guess what? It's really hard. Wer hätte das gedacht (who knew)?
It wasn't all brainwork, though. I managed to cross pollinate a ton of beautiful roses, and evaluate some dahlias that I crossed last year. We also got a full solar array installed on the house.

Wishing you a productive but not too productive autumn,
Don

In the world of interpretation, we refer to messages as themes. The word ‘theme’ has different connotations and meanings. Sometimes I wish we didn’t use the term at all; it’s confusing, and this is one area that we really need to get right. Let’s see …
